Running Weather and Conditions in Taipei Explained

Taipei’s weather and climate conditions are runner-friendly all year round. Whether you’re in a training block or on a vacation and just want to run leisurely, knowing the local weather can help you better prepare for your workouts and running adventures in Taipei City and New Taipei City.

Located near the 25th parallel north, Taipei City has a subtropical climate: hot, humid summers and mild winters. Below are weather information and recommendations broken down by season.

Spring (March-May)

Temperatures: 16–28°C (61–80°F)

Humidity: Moderate to high (70–80%)

Weather patterns:

  • March and early April: This is a great time of the year to run in Taipei. Temperatures are typically around the mid-to-high teens in the mornings and evenings. Occasional cold snaps can occur.
  • Late April to May: Increasing warmth and humidity, with frequent cloudy days and a higher chance of showers and afternoon thunderstorms.

Summer (June–August)

Temperatures: 27–35°C (81–95°F), often feeling hotter due to humidity

Humidity: High (80–95%)

Weather patterns:

  • Hot, humid, and typically sunny mornings giving way to afternoon thunderstorms.
  • Typhoon season peaks from July to September, occasionally disrupting outdoor activities.

Local tips:

  • Hydrate generously, wear lightweight and moisture-wicking gear, and aim for early morning runs to escape the intense heat.
  • I’ve run in drier climates before, where I barely sweat after a run and was able to wear the same clothes the next day. You’ll be sweating a lot in Taipei so ensure you bring enough change of clothing.
  • You might think the running condition becomes cooler after an afternoon shower, but that might not always be the case. The hour right after rainfall is often especially muggy, as moisture evaporates from the hot cement and asphalt surfaces, increasing the humidity.

Autumn (September–November)

Temperatures: 20–30°C (68–86°F)

Humidity: Moderate (70–85%)

Weather patterns:

  • Early autumn (September): Warm and humid with lingering summer thunderstorms and occasional typhoons.
  • October and November: Transitioning to cooler, drier, and more stable weather, with plenty of sunny days still. Arguably the best running season in Taipei.

Local tip: Air quality is mostly good during this time of the year but occasionally impacted by seasonal pollution and regional climate patterns.

Winter (December–February)

Temperatures: 13–20°C (55–68°F)

Humidity: Moderate (65–80%)

Weather Patterns:

  • Generally cool and wet, with frequent cloudy days and drizzle.
  • Cold fronts can significantly lower temperatures at times, but freezing temperatures are rare. Several times a season, temperatures can drop to around 5°C.

Local tips:

  • The high humidity can make it feel colder than the actual temperature suggests. However, it’s also the perfect temperature for running fast, and hence all the major races are slotted in this time of the year.
  • If you plan on trail running or visiting mountain areas, prepare warm, waterproof gear.
