Road runner to trail runner: I don’t get it. For a sport with the word “running” in it, you guys do an awful lot of walking.
Trail runner to road runner: I don’t get it. Flat artificial surface is so boring?
Marathoner to ultrarunner: I don’t get it. What’s fun about running that slow for that long?
Ultrarunner to marathoer: I don’t get it. Don’t you want to test your limits and go further?
Group-run runner to solo runner: I don’t get it. Don’t you want someone to chat with?
Solo runner to group run runner: I don’t get it. It gets crowded and chatty. Running is my me-time.
Doctor to runner: I don’t get it. Why is it so hard for you to take a break?
Significant other: I don’t get it. What’s so “inspirational” about running? It’s just a silly hobby.
Friend: I don’t get it. You want to skip this awesome party because you need to run tomorrow morning?
Better-safe-than-sorry runner: I don’t get it. There’s a pandemic! I can’t believe this race director hasn’t canceled the race.
All-is-well runner: I don’t get it. Urrgghh, another race canceled. I can’t believe everyone is panicking. I trained so hard for this.
Sometimes you don’t have to “get it” to show support and compassion.
Just accept that every one is different. We have different philosophies about running and have different lives. During such difficult and uncertain times, it’s not about getting someone to agree with your point of view.
Even the world’s foremost medical professionals, scientists and economists don’t have all the facts about Covid. Not even they completely “GET” the situation.
Our little world of running has been turned upside down. We are all affected, some more so than others.
- Some runners can still run outside, but not in groups and not in races.
- Some runners are on lock down, and running circles in their living room
- Some runners built their livelihood upon a functioning outdoor sport sector.
- Some runners may even be infected or have loved ones infected.
It’s about open minds, open ears, and open shoulders.
Empathy.
Kindness.
Community.
